Cut Your College Costs

~  How We Work  ~

What's it like to work with the folks at CutYourCollegeCosts.com?   On this page we'll tell you the kind of results our clients have reported and we'll also give you a sense of our guiding beliefs, our approach to working with families and how we're different than other counseling services.

Results You Can Expect

Certified College Planners are thoroughly and continually educated on the academic, financial and tax aspects of planning and paying for college.  And because of that education, your student and family can be correctly positioned to minimize the cost of college.  We can help families a little or a lot, so the benefits and results you’ll experience can include any or all of the following.

Maximize your student and family’s eligibility for Financial Aid - you’ll learn about every possible income, asset and household strategies that apply to your specific situation.  Proper titling of assets (whose name the account’s in) makes a HUGE difference when it comes to needs-based Financial Aid eligibility. You’ll also be coached regarding merit aid strategies and careful college selection.

Guide you through the extensive financial aid and admissions processes - you’ll want to file the necessary forms accurately and on time. We’re here to help you on both fronts.  And we’ll determine if your EFC (eligibility for Financial Aid) has been accurately calculated by the Department of Education and also handle the verification (auditing) process if required.

Review and compare your financial aid award offers - sorting through the various award packages colleges offer your student can be quite confusing.  We pay particular attention to the grants and scholarships versus loans and work-study offered, and can help you appeal an award package (ask for more).  Did you know you could ask for more?

Analyze your loan options - if you’re considering borrowing to pay for college, we’ll review and compare all Federal, private and alternative loan programs available to you.  And we’ll explore creative borrowing strategies.  You’ll know if borrowing is a good avenue to follow and which choices are best for your situation.

Control the cost of college - the fastest way to drive your college costs through the roof is for your student to take 5 or 6 years to get their 4 year degree.  By carefully selecting colleges, we’ll help insure your youngster graduates in four years equipped for a career with good future potential.

Explore possible education tax incentives - there’s lots of ways Uncle Sam can subsidize your college costs.  You’ll be aware of every available tax credit and deduction you’re eligible for, along with the pros and cons of Educational IRA’s, 529 plans and penalty-free withdrawals from traditional IRA’s.

We can provide you with the strategies and also help with the implementation (do some of the heavy lifting) if you like.  Our mission is to make college an affordable reality by helping you lower your out-of-pocket college expenses, maximize your eligibility for Financial Aid and increase the opportunity of admission to your colleges of choice.

Our Values and Guiding Beliefs

Everyone deserves the best education possible.  Regardless of social and economic background, our goals are helping families receive the highest value for their education dollar and making higher education an affordable reality.

Education is everyone’s responsibility, but everyone’s not equipped or has the time to face the challenge.  We'll help you send your kids to college without going broke, without taking on enormous debt and without raiding your retirement.

Prior planning prevents poor performance.  Everything, and we do mean everything, about getting ready for college is time sensitive and deadline-driven.  The earlier you start, and the more thorough your planning, the better your chances of a successful, affordable experience.

College planning and funding is serious business, but there’s no reason we can’t have some fun along the way.  Now we won’t waste your time telling endless jokes, but it’s a proven educational tactic that people learn best when they’re having fun.

We value honesty and integrity, and won’t engage in anything illegal, immoral or unethical to help your situation.  And if we can’t help you, or maybe we’re not a good fit, we’ll tell you. We won’t waste your time and money, or ours.

We believe that trust, commitment and genuine concern for people are critically important aspects in our business and personal relationships.  We want to become your trusted advisor, a partner as invested in your children’s future as you are.

Our Uniqueness

At the very heart of our service, we’re about education.  Educating families about the Financial Aid system, the Admissions process, College selection and visitations, and their various funding and savings options.  Sharing the information they need to lower their out-of-pocket college expenses, maximize their eligibility for Financial Aid and increase their opportunity of admission to their college of choice.

With twenty five years experience in public education, we know the ropes.  We’ve got the communication skills necessary to simplify complex systems and concepts.  We’ll answer your questions, put your minds to rest and help you make sound financial decisions.

As a member of the National Institute of Certified College Planners, we have a code of ethics to adhere to.  We won’t bend or break any rules to help your situation, but we will make you aware of every possible avenue you might explore.  And with annual Continuing Education requirements, we stay current on the latest legislative changes and tax benefits as well as College Funding strategies.

Finally, we’re strong believers of giving back to the community.   By presenting workshops through local Parks & Recreation Departments and Non-profit Associations, we help build their programming and bring in monies needed to fund their organizations.
